Annie (10) has come up with a great idea to boost her ability to self-learn, and she’s challenged other kids to join her.

It’s the first ever School-a-thon!  How much can you learn of the subject you choose? You must study, learn, and do as much as you can to get and A+ in just 1 week!

A few days ago, the girls had made a roly poly habitat in an old swimming pool.  But with all the rain we’ve been having, it filled with a few inches of water on the bottom.  But there was still a pile of dirt on the side, tree branches protruding, and little tiny creatures moving along the bottom.  This got Annie interested in ponds.  She’s always had an interest, due to growing up at Grandpa’s house with his pond in the backyard.  (Now she wants to go there and collect tadpoles.)

The girls spent this afternoon fixing up the new pond area, adding flowers, more dirt, and rocks.

Annie took sample water from the pond and a puddle and viewed it under a microscope, noting differences.  The puddle water had little creatures moving in it, which she believes were water fleas.

Allison loves to draw.  Since we have the butterfly habitat, she decided to make a book.  She drew all the pictures for her story.  We’re going to scan them into the computer and she’s going to learn to digitally color them.  This is something her sister can do and she’s been wanting to learn.  Then Mom’s going to publish the book for her so that she can have a hard copy of it.  She might even try to sell the book.

Illustrating a book

T.J. was grouchy and napless, but wanted to play a video game on the computer (which he can’t do without help).  So I printed out some Letter People activity sheets and let him listen to the Mr. B song.  We named some “B” words and then he glued buttons onto Mr. B.  (It turned out so cute!)
